Helping Parents and Caregivers to Manage the Behavior of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders
Session 1: Understanding and Awareness
Session 2: Building a Predictable Environment and Facilitating Communication
Session 3: Strategies that Promote Self-Control
This 6-hour program, presented as three 2-hour workshops, is designed to help parents manage the behavior of their child with special needs. Parents and Caregivers will learn how to:
- Identify what triggers unwanted behaviors
- Facilitate communication and structure situations to prevent behavioral problems that are avoidable
- Manage behavior incidents that do occur
- Connect to a community of parents for support and encouragement
- Access resources in your school and local community
Help Me Fit In!: Practical Strategies for Teaching your Child Social Skills
These workshops will help parents learn more about the unique challenges and needs that children with Autism Spectrum Disorders face in developing social skills. Parents and caregivers will leave these workshops with a variety of strategies, tools and activities to help your child navigate everyday social interactions. Learn:
- What your child wants you to know
- What your child needs from you
- How your child experiences people and places
- How you can help!
Each workshop is 2 hours and will provide parents and caregivers strategies and skills to help their child navigate everyday social interactions and situations.
- Help Me Make Friends! Tools to Promote Friendship and Structure Playdates In this workshop, parents will learn how to structure social time and how to use carefully chosen activities during the playdate to teach social skills. Parents will also learn and practice strategies to prepare their child for playdates.
- Help Me Organize My Day! Tools to Structure Bed Time and Morning Time This workshop will prepare parents with the tools on how to develop consistent routines, how to create structure around bedtime and morning time, and strategies to support their children in learning and following the routine. These techniques will help make these time periods go more smoothly, which will reduce stress and anxiety for both children and parents. div>
- Help Me Get Through My Homework! Homework Time without Tears and Tantrums In this workshop, parents will learn how to create a consistent homework routine, strategies to reduce anxiety, and how to increase efficiency during homework time, including addressing sensory issues, breaking down homework into manageable chunks, taking breaks, managing emotions, and using visual cues and special interests.
Show and Tell: Using visuals strategies to help your child understand, listen, and follow directions
In this workshop, parents and caregivers will learn all about how to create simple visual supports that they can use to communicate with their child. Whether the child is verbal or nonverbal, visuals improve communication and behavior. There’s a visual for every situation. Improve activities like: Homework, Bedtime, Morning routine, Play dates, Haircuts, Doctor’s visits, Mealtime…and much more! Let’s stop telling children what to do and start showing them!
Helping Parents of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders
Our newest parent training, “Helping Parents and Caregivers to Manage the Behavior of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders,” strives to:
- Increase the understanding and awareness that parents have of factors that affect their child’s behavior
- Provide a forum for parents to support one another through shared experiences
- Encourage parents to talk with their friends, family and communities about the challenges faced by children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and their parents
- Prepare parents with a range of skills to anticipate, avoid, and manage the factors that trigger disruptive behavior
Helping Faith-based Organizations to Become Inclusive Communities
Ramapo Training has developed a training program to help community-based organizations foster the inclusion of children with special needs. This training program provides a Ramapo Training consultant whose support includes:
- Working directly with community leaders and executive and program staff to determine the organization’s programming and accessibility needs for people with disabilities
- Assisting staff and volunteers to identify a leadership committee on inclusion
- Helping committees assess the needs of the community and areas in which they may be deficient through quantitative and qualitative data gathering and analysis
- Serving as a facilitator and guide to the co-chair(s) of the inclusion committee
Starting and Organizing a Committee on Inclusion
Ramapo Training will help your organization:
- Reach out and bring together a group of individuals who have an interest in helping your organization become more welcoming to people with disabilities and their families
- Create a mission statement and a vision statement that cements the role that the Inclusion Committee plays in your organization
Training Seminars for Developing a Committee on Inclusion
Seminar One: Raising Awareness
- A thorough analysis of the barriers facing communities who want to become more inclusive
- Tools for addressing and framing the barriers
- An understanding of the steps needed to become a more inclusive community through the formation of a leadership team for a Committee on Inclusion
Seminar Two: A Roadmap
- A step-by-step approach to organizing a Committee on Inclusion
- Envisioning an inclusive community, assessing needs, organizing and implementing an inclusion plan that will be custom-tailored to meet the unique needs of all synagogue members
- Resources that help to determine the level of need as congregational members with disabilities seek meaningful participation in the spiritual, educational and recreational aspects of their community
